During her youth, Jan lived on a farm near Hebron, Illinois until she moved to Missoula, Montana. She spent hours a day riding her horse on the mountainsides,  meadows, and canyons, surrounding the small city. It is this mountain landscape that Jan has enjoyed painting over the years.

Moving to Indiana with her husband in the early 1960s, she was inspired by the landscape surroundings, to start painting in oils. She took art classes with Norma Mullen who had a profound impact on her paintings. Norma stressed the use of lights and darks to bring a painting alive with light and shadow.

Her second art teacher was Joe Trover who taught her the use of a painting knife to produce exciting depth to a canvas. It was the effect  Jan was looking for, since using a knife meant accurate application of paint with the reveal of texture. Jan also studied for several seasons at the Indianapolis Art League with three outstanding teachers from Indiana. She is also past president of the Southside Art League of Indianapolis.

Today, Jan's art has evolved into a style all her own. She enjoys painting landscapes, horses, old barns, and contemporary scenes. She now lives on a small horse farm in Indiana with her husband, two half Percheron horses, two dogs and a barn full of cats.  Her studio is located at their farm with beautiful country surroundings in all directions.  Jan's daughter Kathy is also a very fine original artist, specializing in acrylic paintings.  Her website is located at:

Prices for these paintings represent unframed artwork.  Different people have different tastes when it comes to selecting a frame. It has been my experience that most buyers of my art, want to pick a frame with texture and color that most suits their surroundings.  A professional framer will help you select a frame that will enhance the painting as well as the décor in your home or office  Therefore, the paintings on this website are presented,  purchased,  and shipped without frames.
